For more than four decades, Green Mountain at Fox Run in Ludlow, Vermont, helped women build a healthier relationship with food, movement and their bodies. It was one of the first retreats to reject dieting in favor of mindful eating, and its work with binge and emotional eating changed many lives. Green Mountain has since closed, after its owners retired.
If you were hoping to return, or to go for the first time, here’s what to look for in a retreat with the same philosophy, and how Skyterra Wellness Retreat in North Carolina approaches healthy weight and emotional eating.
What made Green Mountain different
- No diets, no calorie counting and no shame.
- Mindful eating: learning to recognize hunger, fullness and the reasons we eat when we aren’t hungry.
- A focus on the emotional side of eating, not just the food.
- Movement for enjoyment and health, not punishment.
- A warm, supportive community of women.
What to look for in a non-diet weight retreat
- No restriction. Real meals and nutrition education instead of a calorie target.
- Support for emotional eating. Daily education and access to licensed therapists, not just a meal plan.
- A registered dietitian on the team. Guidance you can trust and take home.
- Movement for every body. Classes that adapt to your fitness, injuries and energy.
- A small, judgment-free group. Somewhere you can be honest about what’s hard.
- A plan for home. Skills that keep working after you leave.
How Skyterra approaches healthy weight and emotional eating
Skyterra isn’t women-only, but most of our guests are women. Our approach is built on the same belief Green Mountain championed: lasting change comes from habits and self-understanding, not deprivation.
- Daily sessions on nutrition, sleep, stress and emotional eating.
- Private sessions with our licensed therapists, available as an enhancement during your stay.
- Chef-prepared meals planned with a registered dietitian. See how we eat.
- More than 80 classes a week, from yoga and mobility to strength and pool workouts, adapted to every level.
- Never more than 35 guests, so the team knows you by name.
- For guests focused on weight loss, LoseSmart is our four-week program, and we offer GLP-1 support for guests on weight-loss medication.
Skyterra is a wellness retreat, not a medical or residential treatment program. If you’re living with a diagnosed eating disorder, talk with your care team about what kind of support is right for you, and tell us about it when you plan your stay.
What a week at Skyterra looks like
Every week starts on a Sunday. Fly into Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) and our free shuttle brings you to campus, about 30 minutes away. Your stay begins with an InBody scan and a functional movement screening, so coaches can shape your week around your body. From there, each day mixes guided hikes, more than 80 fitness classes a week, chef-prepared meals planned with a registered dietitian, and daily sessions on nutrition, sleep, stress and emotional eating. There are never more than 35 guests on campus, so the team knows you by name. See how a week works.
One all-inclusive weekly rate covers private lodging, meals, every class and the airport shuttle: $4,900 for one week, $4,655 a week for two weeks, and $4,270 a week for three weeks or more. Interest-free payment plans are available. See rates and what’s included.
