The Outdoor Living Center at Skyterra: Pickleball and more!

Immersion in nature has always been an essential component of our approach to health and wellness. Tucked to the left just as you enter campus, the Outdoor Living Center includes many unique amenities, including our pickleball courts. 

Designed to encourage movement, cultivate community and supplement your indoor wellness practice perfectly, the Outdoor Living Center features:

  • Three pickleball courts equipped with overhead lighting
  • A custom built, covered outdoor pavilion with a stage
  • An outdoor kitchen and grill island
  • Turf designed for functional fitness experiences
  • Concrete basketball court
  • Archery targets
  • Tables, chairs and cornhole boards around a stone fireplace
  • Fenced dog run so furry friends can join in on the fun!

The Outdoor Living Center boasts something for everyone, no matter your fitness level or experience. Pickleball is our new favorite sport for that very reason. Our weekly pickleball curriculum is accessible to all and promotes active living at Skyterra, and when you return home. 

 

It’s never too late to pick up a new hobby or try something new. Our experienced pickleball instructors will meet you at your unique starting place and ensure you feel comfortable and confident on the court.

The following pickleball classes are offered at Skyterra:

  • Intro to Pickleball: Begin with the basics. If you are a beginner or looking for a pickleball refresh, this class is for you!
  • Pickleball Drills and Play: Boost your heat rate and kick things up a notch with pickleball drills, games and lighthearted rallying
  • Pickleball Open Play: Perfect your rallying skills and maybe even win a point or two against an opponent.
 

Other classes offered at our Outdoor Living Center:

  • Outdoor Circuit: Take to the outdoors for a combination of different strength exercises in an interval-style workout
  • Skyterra Fitness Games: A guest favorite, you’ll work with your teammates to win this outdoor event combining mini movement-based games, relay races and a variety of upbeat workouts 
  • Archery: Join us for target practice and learn why recurve archery, an Olympic sport, can be fun for everyone
  • Campfire and cornhole: Don’t skip out on some community cornhole and conversation around an evening campfire under the stars.

Pickleball Week at Skyterra Wellness Retreat in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is a fully integrated vacation designed for the pickleball athlete.

From Aug. 24 to 31, enjoy a stay focused entirely on your game. Strength training, yoga, nutrition, cardio, and recovery sessions are all tailored to enhance performance, prevent injury, and support progress on the court.

In addition to skill-building and strategy sessions, players receive personalized feedback through video analysis and a custom improvement plan.

With expert coaching and a holistic wellness approach, this program will level up your game — and your health — for the long term.

Meet our Pickleball Instructors

Deb Harrison

An athlete turned coach with several decades of experience, “Pickle Pong Deb” was selected Player of the Decade by the Florida State Senior games association and has accumulated many notable medals over her 17 years of competitive play. Deb is the author of Intense Pickleball Camp: Take it to the Next Level and is the creator of an ongoing instructional YouTube series with more than 200 videos devoted to helping you improve your pickleball skills.

Joel Alnes

Joel is the Head Pickleball Coach here at Skyterra. He has won gold and silver medals in men’s doubles and mixed doubles at 4.0 and 4.5 skill levels in numerous pickleball tournaments, and is a credentialed Level 2 USAPA referee.

Katie Nowicki

Katie Nowicki is an amateur pickleball player from Asheville, N.C. She has extensive coaching experience in multiple youth and high school sports and is a lifelong athlete. Katie began playing pickleball in 2020 and has medaled in various 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 tournaments in Western North Carolina.

Louise Knutter is a former competitive high school tennis player, amateur women’s hockey player, and runner. Since relocating to Asheville she has become a well-known and highly respected pickleball player at the Asheville Racquet Club and several other clubs and local pickleball courts. She has competed in pickleball tournaments and leagues in Asheville, Greenville, Charlotte and Hilton Head Island at the 3.5 and 4.0 levels. She has also medaled in both 3.5 and 4.0 leagues in both mixed doubles and women’s doubles.

Mark Livingston

Mark has played 50 tournament events at the 4.0 and 4.5 levels, winning 27 medals in singles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles competition. He relocated back to North Carolina in August 2024 to be closer to family and new grandson.
